Indian government employees more efficient

Biometric market solutions make Indian government employees more efficient

India's central government has recently implemented a biometric based timekeeping system that helps track employees attendance. An official study released by the Indian government has shown that in the three months between September 2014 and January 2015 the average employee has been spending around 20 minutes more time working every day. As the average working day is 8.5 hours, when the 20 minutes time is accounted for it equals an extra 1,900 employees every day.

"Considering that over 47,000 employees are using it now, an average gain of 20-minutes per day means an approximate gain of 16,000 man-hours," said a government official. There is also a website called attendance.gov.in that allows visitors to track employees' attendance in real time. One of the aims of this biometric timekeeping system was to increase transparency and accurately record employees in and out times.

Biometric market solutions are also expected to become used in a greater range of consumer goods than ever before. Apple have already incorporated biometric fingerprint scanners in a number of their iOS based devices, including the recently released iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Other smart phone producers such as Samsung are predicted to follow suit and use biometric features for a wide range of applications in their upcoming devices. It has been forecast that the global biometrics market will total around US$30 billion by 2020, thanks to the influx of large companies utilising biometrics products in their product lineup.

Biometric solutions such as Apple's Touch ID have led to the fingerprint recognition segment of the biometrics market estimated to be worth US$3.2bn in 2014. However, Civil ID is believed to be the largest application segment with a value of US$4.6bn in 2014. As more and more companies digitalise their products, biometric solutions will see their market capitalisation rise even further.

A recent product from BlackBox Biometrics called Linx is a chip worn behind a person's ear and is used to monitor impacts that can cause both major and minor injuries to the head. Linx is targeted towards sports players and includes an accompanying smartphone app that can receive information from the Linx chip that creates an impact report that can be given to a doctor for analysis. The biometrics market is estimated to see a CAGR of 19% from 2014 and 2020 due to the wide range of applications that solutions in this market have.
